Buying a Treadmill? Make Sure It’s Got What You Need.

Helen from Texas asked: “Hi, I just started the Atkins diet recently and I want to exercise in addition to the diet, and I was thinking about buying a treadmill. What are some things I should be looking for when buying a treadmill?”

Buying a treadmill is an excellent idea for most Atkins Dieters! Any diet works better if accompanied by exercise, and many of us just don’t have the time to get to the gym.

There are a few things that you should look for. . . .

First, you should keep in mind how hard you want to work on the treadmill. If you’re just looking for something to supplement the diet and to do a light workout with, you won’t need something with tons of features and complexities.

Second, keep in mind how much money you’re willing to spend on the treadmill. Treadmills can get pretty expensive, going up into the $3,000 range. This may be much too expensive for you. However, the cheaper treadmills may have a much lower quality. In essence, you’re really getting what you pay for. But, again, it all really depends on how many features you want, and how often you’re going to use the treadmill.

Another important thing to look at is how much you weigh and how large the weight capacity is on the treadmill. If you weight 300 pounds, for example, you won’t want a treadmill with a 300 pound weight capacity. You’d probably want to go for a treadmill with something more like a 400 pound capacity. The larger the weight capacity, the more expensive the treadmill, so that may even be motivation enough to lose some weight before buying!

Something else to look out for is the actual layout of the treadmill. If you are older and/or have trouble with balance, make sure to get something with secure, convenient handles all along the side of the treadmill. You won’t want something with little dinky handles just in the front. You should also be concerned with the dimensions of the treadmill. You don’t want a treadmill with a belt that’s too short. Belts that are too short can be a dangerous hazard if your feet start hitting the front of the treadmill.

Also, many treadmills have an incline or decline feature to help you burn more calories. This is a great feature if you’re already on the Atkins diet, and want to burn more fat.

You may also want a treadmill with features on the console. If you read or listen to music when you walk/run, you should get a treadmill with a place to put these things. Some treadmills also come with fans in the console.

And finally, some words of caution: if you are over 50 years old or have some sort of medical condition, please contact your doctor before starting an exercise program. Also, if you have children, you should keep your treadmill somewhere where they won’t be tempted to play on it.

Treadmills can be dangerous for young children.

With that said, good luck on your quest for your perfect treadmill. I hope I have been of some help!
