Does Hoodia Work With Atkins?

Jane L in Baltimore wrote me a question the other day that I had to do quite a bit of research on. It’s a good thing because I’d been curious about this exact topic too, but I’d never gotten around to looking into it.

Here’s what Jane wrote: “I’ve been on the Atkins Diet for about 6 weeks. I lost 7 pounds during induction, but have only lost 3 pounds during the entire month afterwards. I’ve seen a bunch of ads for Hoodia diet pills and other hoodia supplements. Can I use hoodia while on the Atkins Diet?”

Here’s the straight story on Hoodia, Jane. . .

If you don’t know about Hoodia already, it’s quite the craze in diet circles these days. Hoodia’s full name is actually Hoodia Gordonii, and is a cactus-looking plant that comes from the deepest part of South Africa and has proven successful for hundreds of years and is now available worldwide.

The story goes that, starting thousands of years ago, the “San” tribe lived in the Kalahari desert. They were hunters and often went on long trips looking for game, and they often went days without eating. They chewed the leaves of the Hoodia Gordonii plant to suppress their hunger and thirst during their journeys across the desert.

Hoodia itself has no carbs, but it does have a molecule called “p57” which is apparently the magical potion in the herb.

So long as the pill is not mixed with other herbs, Hoodia has no known side effects.  Hoodia taken properly, with an excellent nutritional program, including constant healthy exercise and a healthy diet, could advance your weight loss program drastically.

As Atkinâ??s Dieters, you know the effect is that you’ll ultimately eat fewer calories, and that contributes to weight loss. Hoodia may make it easier for you to make it through those cravings for those forbidden carb-laden foods.

One word of caution: the Hoodia Diet is known for its â??quick fixâ?? and is not intended for a long term diet program. Atkins is a better choice for that. But Hoodia is intended to reduce hunger cravings and help you change your approach to weight loss.  It is probably better that once you have reached your weight goal or a healthy weight in general you continue with maintenance on the Atkins Diet.

So, to more directly answer your question, Jane, Hoodia may help you get off that plateau, but utimately you are looking for a diet to work in terms of a way of life, not just a quick fix.  Hoodia may be your temporary solution to a quick weight loss, but remember that with Atkins, your main goal is to find a healthy way of living.

If you decide to give it a try, will you let me know how it goes?

You said that as long as Hoodia is not mixed with other herbs, it has no known side effects. Do you know if some companies sell it with other herbs in them? If so, what side effects can Hoodia have?

    Thanks,
