The Zone Diet vs. The Atkins Diet

Alexis from Detroit asked: â??Iâ??ve been considering going on the Atkins Diet for a while now; but Iâ??ve also been weighing it against other diet options (particularly the Zone Diet). Is one better than the other? What are the main differences? Thanks.â?

While both the Atkins Diet and the Zone Diet are usually lumped into the same â??trendy low-carb dietâ? category, there are actually plenty of differences between the two.

Most people would say that the Zone Diet is much more complicated, and has many more rules to remember. That is, itâ??s much more complicated than the Atkins Diet.

The Zone Diet requires you to have meals with different sub-block categories. For example, you must have one carbohydrate block (9 grams), one protein block (7 grams with no fat), and one fat block (3 grams). For every meal, you would have three of each block. Also, unlike the Atkins Diet, with the Zone Diet must always eat a ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Sound confusing? Thereâ??s more. You also may not wait more than five hours between eating, and there is a maximum protein level for each day that you cannot exceed. This is very different from the Atkins diet, in which you can eat however many grams of protein your heart desires.

Another main difference between the two diets is that the goal of the Zone Diet is to consume the right mixture of carbohydrates and protein so that glucagons are produced instead of insulin. The whole emphasis of the Zone Diet is actually on insulin control. So if you are a diabetic, this may be a better choice for you. Also, The Zone Diet claims to improve numerous health conditions based on the balance between carbs and protein, and the effect that has on your body.

There are also a few down sides to the Zone Diet. First of all, your total amount of protein for the day should not be restricted-which the Zone does. This has actually been shown to be quite unhealthy in most cases. Also, The Zone Dietâ??s ratios may not be for everyone. People have different body-types and different nutritional needs, so you should definitely look into the Zone Diet yourself, and make sure that their recommendations fit your needs and lifestyle. Another problem you may be concerned with is cholesterol. All other low-carb diets have been shown to lower, or improve cholesterol levels (including the Atkins Diet), except the Zone Diet. So if you are concerned with your cholesterol level, you may want to try the Atkins Diet instead.

Honestly, there is not a clear â??betterâ? choice. There are many ups and downs to each diet. You may need to research both a little bit yourself, or even try both out and see what works best for you. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
